Generative AI (GenAI) can be exciting or deeply terrifying. If you fear a computer program having independent thought, self-awareness and the ability to execute cyberattacks on its own, then stop worrying. We’re not there yet. But that doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye to the future.

Sophos is keeping a watchful eye on GenAI's use in cybersecurity. A new report, “Beyond the Hype: The Businesses Reality of AI for Cybersecurity,” provides pivotal insights regarding GenAI's adoption and its implications for cybersecurity. Here are three key findings that deserve attention.

AI Risk Awareness

While 65 percent of IT leaders reported adopting GenAI capabilities, a significant 89 percent expressed concern about the potential flaws in these tools that could put their organization at risk.

Despite AI’s promise of enhanced protection from cyber threats, the quality and implementation of these tools remain paramount. Organizations are increasingly aware of the risks posed by poorly designed AI models. There is a growing expectation for vendors to provide transparency about their AI capabilities. Sophos partners can address these worries by providing quality solutions that leverage AI and deliver proven security.

Over-Reliance on AI

The survey indicates that AI is embedded in the cybersecurity infrastructure of 98 percent of organizations, yet IT leaders are wary of an over-reliance on AI technology. A striking 87 percent of respondents voiced concerns about the potential erosion of cybersecurity accountability.

As organizations lean on AI for threat detection and response, there is a rising fear that the human element may be sidelined. Channel partners must recognize this sentiment and advocate for a balanced approach, reinforcing the importance of human oversight even as AI tools become commonplace.

GenAI Expectations

The priorities for utilizing GenAI differ significantly across organizations of varying sizes. Larger enterprises see improved protection from cyber threats as their primary goal. Smaller organizations (50-99 employees) prefer to use GenAI tools to reduce employee burnout. Despite these differing priorities, a common thread emerged: IT leaders want improved business performance (both financial and operational). Sophos partners can address these concerns by positioning GenAI as a supportive tool rather than as a replacement for cybersecurity professionals.

As a trusted advisor to your clients, it is essential to navigate these risks by using GenAI to enhance their cyber defenses and overall business outcomes. Read the report to learn more about IT leaders utilizing Gen AI.
